o Introduction ⇑ ⇓collapse_button

BartekBartek October is here again, with Halloween drawing ever so closer. Halloween has something for everyone - kids get to dress up in costumes and collect candy, horror fans get to decorate their houses and watch horror films, good or bad, and religious fundamentalists have something to protest against. Of course, being the latter, Chick made a couple of Halloween-related tracts, and today’s dissection choice is his 1986 tract, The Trick! Not only was it written with “information” by Rebecca Brown, with a dash of John Todd thrown in for good measure, but it’s also based on the “poisoned halloween candy” urban legend, making it a triple whammy.

MattMatt Howdy folks, I'm Matt of r/ChickTractCollecting on Reddit. I'm extremely excited to be a part of a tract dissection and I want to thank the fine folks here at Boolean Union for asking me to take part. Not only that but a tract centered around my favorite holiday no less. Enough about me, check out my subreddit for more because I'm ready to get started!

BlakeBlake Oh boy, this is gonna be fun. As someone who’s always been really interested in the Satanic Panic (and in the history of occultism as a cultural phenomenon more generally), I’ve always had a particular love of Chick’s more anti-occult oriented tracts. In fact, I think I first discovered Chick Tracts when I was researching the Satanic Panic.

JessicaJessica This is truly a momentous occasion, and not just because Halloween always gives us a ready-made excuse to break out and harp on the absolute peak examples of Chick's complete fig-nuttery. You see, today marks the ten-year anniversary of Chick's shuffling off of his mortal coil and finally going to meet his maker – surrounded by his devoted loved ones, his faithful dog, and his favorite bedpan. Just kidding… he died in his sleep after nearly two decades of medical issues, personal losses, and overall declining health. Fred Carter spent the next five years trying to keep the spirit of Chick Publications alive. But while the spirit may have still been willing there, the flesh was unfortunately just a tad too weak by that point. After Fred earned his eternal reward too that just left David W. Daniels to carry the torch and, well, we all know how that's been working out for them so far, now don't we?

Without further ado, let us dive into a true Halloween classic, The Trick.

BlakeBlake Here we have three classic Halloween costumes: Witch, Devil, and Condom. And the obligatory Halloween punkin of course.

JessicaJessica Thank you for referencing this. We've discussed the weird symbiosis that temporarily existed between Chick Publications and Jeremiah Films’… <ahem>... videos before. Glenn Hobbs was completely and absolutely full of shit, but you honestly need to check out their entry on Halloween in its entirety. It is truly something else.

Also, we kinda have the proto-Lock, Shock, and Barrel going on here.

MattMatt Oh yeah, great cover. That bright Halloween orange, kids in costumes of creatures that make Chick and his style of Christians, absolutely quake in their boots. This one is already great.

BartekBartek This is a nitpick, but whenever anyone says “As you know…” it kinda feels pointless. If they know it, then there’s no reason to repeat it, especially if it’s something they know is important.

BlakeBlake Even the Satanists can’t escape boring-ass team meetings. Also, there’s something so goofy about the concept of an evil, child-sacrificing Satanist called Sister Charity. I’m guessing it’s meant to imply that Satanists trick people into joining by pretending to be all about peace and love (like the “LUCIFER… thou god of peace and love” moment in The Broken Cross) but come on. Satanists have cool names like Dark Lord Blood.

JessicaJessica There's nothing quite so Satanic as arranging a work gathering where everyone is required to be present and in uniform when the same thing can just be accomplished with a single email, now is there?

BartekBartek Sister Charity, isn’t it? That’s an ironic name for a Satan worshipper, and it’s a little cool, until you realise that Charity is essentially doing good deeds, which of course will never get you to Heaven. I’m not sure if this was Chick’s intention, but you can never be too sure with him.

MattMatt Evil lurking in the suburbs, go figure! I wonder if they take their robes to the dry cleaners. Is the owner oblivious or a cult member themselves? I guess we'll have to read more to find out.

BartekBartek The owner is a satanist, the chief of the police is a satanist, everyone and their mother is a satanist! That nice Christian couple next door? They’re satanists, and they don’t even know it!

MattMatt I love to hate Chick's art like a heel in a pro wrestling match. This is after JTC had enlisted the services of Fred Carter, but Chick still would insist on inking occasional realistic styled people. As we say here in Kentucky, bless his heart he's tried his best.

BlakeBlake Sister Charity rocking the Nikki Sixx look.

BartekBartek “Wanna know how I got these scars?”

JessicaJessica God, even Satanism needs to be bogged down with hierarchy and regulations. Capitalism ruins everything!

o Page 4 ⇑ ⇓collapse_button

BartekBartek …Yeah, you read that right. The satanists are cursing candies to influence kids more easily. Come on, is this the best Satan can do? And this cartoonish tactic is something that supposedly occurs in real life. Gimme a break.

JessicaJessica The stereotype is always “razor blades in the apples” or “razor blades in the candy bars”. But think about it for just a second. Would you not notice a huge, honking piece of stainless steel jutting out of a Hershey bar? Or somehow miss a gigantic soft, bruised spot on an apple before shoveling it into your gob? Who the hell gives out apples for Halloween, anyway? You'd get your house egged to Hell and back for passing out apples.

BartekBartek Now that you mention it, yeah, how are they supposed to hide razor blades inside treats? That would take a helluva long time and work.

MattMatt Oh boy, this old chestnut. Never has there ever been a case of this actually happening but my parents insisted on looking over all my candy every year. Hmm, I'm wondering now if this was just a thinly veiled ruse to pilfer through my trick-or-treating spoils…

BlakeBlake I’m really glad Chick explained what ‘sacrifices’ means.

BartekBartek Behold the instruments of destruction: syringes, broken glass, straight pins and <GASP> bags of candy! Also note that the BAGS of candy are cursed, rather than the candies themselves. So are they, like, gonna pollute the environment with them?

JessicaJessica The frogurt is also cursed…

BlakeBlake That looks like one badass pizza party. They must be summoning the Anticrust.

MattMatt Oh this has got John Todd's fingerprints all over it. At least there was something fun about the ridiculous claims of Chick's other muse, Alberto. John Todd was just gross.

JessicaJessica Half of the dissectors we've gathered here are non-American and so I need to ask: is Trick-or-Treating still a thing in your countries? It was big here in the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave when I was a kid. But in recent years, the helicopter parenting and social anxiety has reached such a fever pitch that almost no one really does the door-to-door thing anymore. I mostly blame this kind of urban legend fear-mongering for causing its downfall. Even if they do, it's usually over well before the sun actually goes down and many just opt for those lame-ass Trunk-or-Treat copycats (usually held by a church or police organization) instead.

BlakeBlake Trick-or-treating isn't a huge thing in New Zealand, but it happens. I did it a couple of times as a kid.

MattMatt I've lived in the same town in Kentucky, USA all my life. Halloween used to be a huge deal when I was growing up (early 90s), but the September 11 attacks killed trick-or-treating. That Halloween right after was so paranoid and it was never the same. I never remember anything overtly religious. Oddly enough, the one persistent Halloween urban legend around here was that crazy bible-thumping Christians will kill black cats around Halloween because it might be a witch in disguise.

BartekBartek Halloween in Poland is largely celebrated by kids and younger people, and even so it isn’t as big as it is in the US. As for the religious perspective, Poland is a largely Roman Catholic country, and many priests and religious people dislike Halloween for stealing the spotlight from Poland’s national holidays, All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, and/or for being satanic. Other people are more lenient, though, and there have also been religious alternatives, wherein kids dress as their patrons and other saints.

BlakeBlake It’s just the neighbours watching CSI: Miami.

MattMatt I wonder which neighbor is responsible? It couldn't possibly be Vampira down the street…

JessicaJessica Just a child screaming. Man, your Neighborhood Watch sucks, kid.

BartekBartek Brenda isn’t even trying to hide her satisfaction, not one bit. Even if she serves Satan well, she’s an unconvincing actress.

BlakeBlake Wait, why is the doctor saying all of this just to the one kid's parents? It's not even like he's breaking the awful news to them, and then turning to the other parents and telling them that their kids are fine. The other parents don't seem to be there at all. He's literally just like “sorry, your kid's dead and that's a devastating loss that will likely haunt you for the rest of your life… but your kid's friends are fine, so don't be too sad”.

In fact, where are the other parents?

MattMatt Poor Johnny. As for Brenda, I guess everyone grieves differently? She's doing a miserable job of pretending to be concerned, let alone shocked.

JessicaJessica Seriously. You should really try a bit harder to hide your status as a moustache-twirling sleeper agent if you don't want to get outed as a Satanist during your next Scentsy party with the local moms.

o Page 9 ⇑ ⇓collapse_button

Page 9

BartekBartek “My heart! Must…utter…last words!” So how did Sister Charity die, exactly? Did God cause her heart attack? If so, couldn’t He have done it before Halloween? Preferably to the entire coven? Or maybe she accidentally ate one of the poisoned candies due to Brenda’s mistake? “Brenda, you fucking idiot! We told you to make sure we got the right candies!”

BlakeBlake Rather than the evil stranger lurking in the shadows waiting to harm innocent children, the most well known case of a kid actually dying from poisoned Halloween candy turned out to be a life insurance scam by his father.

The poisoned Halloween candy urban legend is actually kind of interesting as a social phenomenon. It’s part of the broader phenomenon of Halloween sadism. Belief in urban legends of Halloween sadism mostly began to gain traction around the 60s and 70s, at a time when there was already an increasing sense that the world was no longer safe, particularly with the perception of children being ‘taken’ by countercultural values and radical politics, and the very real fear of children dying in Vietnam. Basically existing social anxieties about the safety of children, and the inviolability of the family, made people more likely to believe in these kinds of legends, because they gave a concrete form to much more nebulous fears. I highly recommend the 1985 article ‘The Razor Blade in the Apple: The Social Construction of Urban Legends’ by Joel Best and Gerald T. Horiuchi.

BartekBartek Of course fearmongers like Chick ignore any actual evidence and cling onto unfounded urban legends, hoping that the average person believes this sort of thing.

MattMatt The real poison was actually that cursed Communion wine all along. I wonder how many packs of Capri 120s Sister Charity smoked a day to wash down all that satanic sangria? It was the 80s after all.

JessicaJessica Those “Hypervelocity Karma Rods” strike again!

o Page 10 ⇑ ⇓collapse_button

BartekBartek Oh man, this kind of dialogue is why I love Chick Tracts. “My trick was getting you to serve me. Now your treat is to burn.” Haw haw indeed. Also, Satan looks like he’s brandishing a cape, striking a supervillain pose.

MattMatt Ah, we finally get a Haw, haw, haw! AND from the head heathen himself. Yeah, I agree with Bartek, tract dialogue is among the best of the worst.

JessicaJessica You can't see it from this angle or in this lighting, but ‘ol Lucifer here is treating Sister Charity to a world class “helicoptering”. It compounds the humiliation… sort of like the demonic equivalent of tea bagging.

o Page 11 ⇑ ⇓collapse_button

Page 11

BlakeBlake Gee, I wonder if Susie and Jerry’s change in personality could be due to the trauma of almost fucking dying.

BartekBartek Surviving such a painful and traumatic experience at this age and having your friend die is gonna leave one with psychological scarring for a long time, and if we assume that the kids were at least somewhat religious, they’d be right for being pissed off at God for allowing it to happen.

JessicaJessica Right. You don't need demonic influence or “cursed Halloween candy” to get your kids to act rebellious and sullen. Having a friend die an unexpected and untimely death can work just as well. Also (and I know this may be a shock to you), but there’s also this thing called “puberty” which can frequently do a number on a kid's emotional stability, you know?

MattMatt Puberty? That's one of Satan's tricks like fossils, and physics. Those dinosaur bones that predate humans? Obviously put there by Ol’ Scratch to confuse us.

o Page 12 ⇑ ⇓collapse_button

BlakeBlake Brenda appears to be channeling Hide The Pain Harold here.

JessicaJessica “Just ignore your child's trauma… it'll go away.”

MattMatt Definitely, Brenda better be glad she can divine the Tarot because her poker face is hot garbage.

JessicaJessica You can see Becky's gears here just trying to grind away. Simple cause and effect, people.

BartekBartek Even though The Two Babylons does mention the Druids and the sacrifices, it still feels weird to see the book mentioned here, as Chick primarily uses it to bash Roman Catholicism. Eh, that book is a bunch of hooey, anyway.

BlakeBlake I’m guessing, based on her appearance and the fact her name is Becky, that she is supposed to be partly based on Rebecca Brown, who inspired several of Chick’s other Satanic Panic tracts (including Satan’s Master and The Poor Little Witch). Brown claimed to have rescued a woman called Elaine from Satanists (the whole story is honestly one of the most bonkers Satanic Panic era ‘ex-satanist’ testimonies I’ve ever heard, for anyone unfamiliar with it, this is a pretty good write-up). Interestingly, all of Chick’s Rebecca Brown stand-ins (Becky here, Mrs Grayson in The Poor Little Witch, and Judy in Satan’s Master) seem to have been given Elaine’s ex-satanist backstory, presumably so he had one less character to draw.

MattMatt Oh boy, I had forgotten all about Rebecca Brown, somehow. One of JTC's merry band of con-artists. I gotta wonder how much of it was for the “greater good” and how much was just seeing Chick as another mark.

JessicaJessica It is just so refreshing when they come right out and admit that they think lying is okay so long as it “advances the Kingdom of Heaven” or some shit.

o Page 14 ⇑ ⇓collapse_button

Page 14

JessicaJessica I made the same point when they brought up this ridiculous John Todd-inspired tidbit over in Spellbound, but it bears repeating again here: If you lost one family member per year to the druids, either due to direct sacrifice or through passive demon murder, everyone in the country would be dead within a decade. The math ain't mathing here, people!

BlakeBlake At least he’s not claiming they went “from castle to castle” this time.

MattMatt That's the first major update I've noticed between the two versions. I wonder what prompted the addition of a point to the star.

BartekBartek Since we’re on the subject of Spellbound and the pentagram being changed to a hexagram, I might as well add my own two cents. A hexagram is a geometric figure which has been used for a long time in many cultures and religions before becoming widely accepted as a Jewish symbol. The usage of the hexagram in Jewish iconography, circled or not, dates way back to antiquity. There really is no difference whether or not there’s a circle around it or not, yet Chick and John Todd pushed the idea that the circled star is a “perverted” version of Magen David. This just goes to show just how truly ignorant and gullible he was towards ramblings of “experts” like Todd, to the point where he condemns and exalts the same symbol without understanding that they’re the same thing. This sort of doublethink also applies to his views towards Jews in general, in that he supported them only because of the whole end times prophecy, yet otherwise stated that they’ll go to hell if they don’t accept Jesus. For another example of Chick’s theological doublethink, check out any tract or comic where he states that God and Allah are two different gods.

JessicaJessica They're always going back and tweaking tracts whenever they're proven wrong or they come up with a better argument. But this right here is a seriously blatant change to make in hindsight.

o Page 15 ⇑ ⇓collapse_button

Page 15

MattMatt One of Chick's favorite tropes, the former “what-you-are-now” that has repented and is about to school you on the topic of the week.

JessicaJessica Do you really want to get into a pissing contest about splitting hairs over reappropriated older religious traditions? Because you're lobbing stones in a glass house with that one, mate.

BlakeBlake Ah yes, good old Bill Schnoebelen. Everyone’s favourite former Catholic, Wiccan, Satanist, vampire, 90th Degree Mason and Mormon… am I forgetting anything?

BartekBartek Brenda’s getting steaming mad, literally by the looks of the little smoke above her head.

o Page 16 ⇑ ⇓collapse_button

Page 16

MattMatt They always say the greatest trick Satan ever pulled is making the world think he doesn't exist. Next, he's gonna pull a hobgoblin out of his hat!

BlakeBlake I heard that the Devil is dead and buried in Killarney.

JessicaJessica Actually, Becky, Brenda is kinda right here. Obviously theistic Satanists exist because if there's a ridiculous idea you can hold, statistically speaking someone out there will unironically hold it. But the vast majority of most modern Satanist traditions such as the Church of Satan and the Satanic Temple do not believe in the literal existence of an actual Satan. He's more of a symbolic avatar for personal liberation, rejection of authority, and the pursuit of knowledge. The reason they do this is specifically to irk and frighten uptight busybodies such as yourself and it very clearly continues to work most effectively even today.

o Page 17 ⇑ ⇓collapse_button

JessicaJessica “It's not paranoia if they really are out to get you!!!” Give me a break…

BartekBartek “Witches, devils and demons are just make-believe? That’s what THEY want you to think!”

MattMatt I have family members who honestly believe very Chicky conspiracies. The weird part is most of them acquired these ideas with little-to-no known exposure to Chick’s work. I grew up hearing a lot about how things are actually Satan. That didn't stop me from getting to trick-or-treat thankfully.

BlakeBlake “I can’t buy this devil nonsense, I have to buy him something thoughtful.”

o Page 18 ⇑ ⇓collapse_button

Page 18

MattMatt Can we get some statistics on “the children who are mutilated and murdered every Halloween” please? Of all the times for JTC to add a little *trust me bro at the bottom of the panel, and of course it's the main scare tactic pushed in the tract.
BlakeBlake I mean yeah, murder generally isn’t an accident. That’s what makes it murder.
JessicaJessica If satanists and witches actually murdered as many people as Christians claim they do, where exactly are they hiding all of the bodies? You can only dig so many holes and burning leaves evidence. And hell, you can only eat so much!

o Page 19 ⇑ ⇓collapse_button

Page 19

BartekBartek “How do I shut her up? Hmmm, I’ll think it over. Hope I come up with something before the tract ends.”

Remember, everyone, any change in your children that is not to your liking is the devil’s work. Also, it seems like proofreaders didn’t exist in 1986. Now that’s scarey.

MattMatt Uh-oh Vampira, looks like it's time for Plan 10.

BlakeBlake Is that a pentagram around Brenda’s neck? Subtle.
JessicaJessica These nutjobs actually believe in real, demonstrable magic. It really shouldn't surprise me at this point, but it still never ceases to catch me off guard.

o Page 20 ⇑ ⇓collapse_button

BartekBartek “Jesus came to destroy Satan’s power.” And yet Satan still runs amok, with permission to poison and hurt innocent kids.

MattMatt Satan hates this one simple trick! Read more to find out!

JessicaJessica What a load of malarkey. Everybody knows that He-Man has more power than Jesus.

Also, what is this crap?!? We got the standard Suffering Christ, but I want my JOHN 3:16!

o Page 21 ⇑ ⇓collapse_button

Page 21

MattMatt Is that the best you got Brenda? Some grawlixes? I do love Chick's overuse of those little obscenicons though.

BlakeBlake The whole Becky vs Brenda plotline is kinda disappointing. Brenda tries to figure out how to stop Becky but just… doesn’t. Couldn’t Chick at least have her try to curse Becky and have it fail or backfire like in Satan’s Master?

JessicaJessica Oh… my… god, Becky.

BartekBartek And Brenda just gives up, throwing a hissy fit. Guess she was so occupied trying to find a way to stop Becky that she ran out of time to actually do anything.

o Page 22 ⇑ ⇓collapse_button

Page 22

BartekBartek There’s those words again, “precious” and “little.” Chick sounds so condescending whenever he uses them.

BlakeBlake I actually have a copy of He Came To Set The Captives Free. My favourite part is the warning at the start that’s basically like “If you find this book boring or shit, it’s because Satan is trying to stop you from reading it.”

JessicaJessica They just completely yeeted the reference to Rebecca Brown in the modern version. You can see that between the earlier “D” print of this tract and the modern version shown here on mouse-over that they added Brown's actual mailing address to the tract… something which likely resulted in a flood of court summons and hate mail landing in their mailbox.

Seems that as Chick gradually started to wake up to the fact that every “expert” he'd ever partnered with was actually a swindling grifter, he began gradually redacting references to them in his work. He was pretty well entrenched with Brown / Yoder here for a time, even recording the Closet Witches cassettes with her and her bizarre patient / accomplice / roommate “Elaine”. For the longest time this was one of the only recordings of his voice actually available to the public as well. He did something similar with William Schnoebelen as he descended deeper and deeper into conspiracy theory madness.

MattMatt So Brenda just gets away with her hand in killing a child. Bravo, Jack. That's one of my biggest problems with JTC's little comic books. Rarely if ever does the bad guy actually see any sort of earthly punishment (coughcough-Lisa-coughcough). Though I suppose, according to Chick anyway, Brenda and those like her will receive a punishment unlike any that can be inflicted on Earth.

BartekBartek A lot of Chick characters suffer from the What Happened to the Mouse? syndrome, since Chick focuses much more on getting the message through. Once a character fulfills their role in the story, they can promptly disappear.

o Conclusion ⇑ ⇓collapse_button

MattMatt Oh boy, this one is something. JTC's infantile artwork is crammed into nothing but two-page panels to jam in as much shock and awe as possible. Chick vs. Halloween is always a good time. I wanna thank the folks at Boolean Union for having me, this has been a blast.

BartekBartek This is another tract that’s interesting to read as a little time capsule, in this case to the days where parents were genuinely and somewhat understandably worried that their children could get hurt by something as innocuous as candy. Despite this, it isn’t my favorite tract, but it was still worthy of a dissection. Happy Halloween, everybody, and as a friendly reminder, do check what’s inside your treats, okay?

JessicaJessica When one thinks back on the rogue's gallery of con men and charlatans who so profoundly steered Chick's theology over the years, it is common to get caught up on either the more longstanding individuals like Alberto Rivera, or the more blatantly absurd characters such as John Todd and William Schnoebelen. This does a great disservice to this tract's primary contributor, Rebecca Brown. While her time in Chick's orbit was brief in comparison to the span of his entire career, and many of the minor theories she contributed were essentially just bland rehashings of Todd's “Satanists rule the world” schtick, she nevertheless greatly helped to cement the idea that a closeted witch or a sleeper Satanist could be working in your local hospital or at your child's school. The fact that she was a professionally disavowed medical professional with a taste for copious amounts of demerol and involved in a pseudo-sapphic, live-in relationship with her pupil/patient “Elaine” is not lost on anyone in the same way it was lost on Chick way back during the fever pitch of the Satanic Panic. The relationship between Brown and Chick was symbiotic, with her giving him all of the hidden dirt on her former (supposed) discoveries involving Satanism, and him publishing a number of her books for several years. Despite the degree of harm this breed of ignorance and fear-mongering inevitably caused during that unfortunate era, I suppose that we should at least extend a reluctant and posthumous thanks to crackpots such as Rebecca Brown for adding the most potent spices to Chick's conspiracy theory stew. After all, it was the sheer ridiculousness of some of their claims, channeled through his cutesy drawings, that allow us to look back on them with the rose-colored glasses of hindsight and chuckle. Still, the fires of the next cultural panic are right around the corner, and if we are not vigilant to tamp down ridiculous ideas such as these and limit the influence and power of the people who peddle them, we'll very easily find ourselves right back in the thick of it with no idea how we got there so quickly.

Anyway, while his ideas may still be desperately trying to rise from the grave a decade after his passing, at least we can all still celebrate the Devil's Birthday by remembering that Chick's tired bones still lie a'mouldering in an obscure plot somewhere in the foothills of California… safely out of reach from the greedy hands of the Jesuits who would want to dig them up and put them on trial, as well as those of any Tumblr witches that might wish to fashion jewelry out of them to sell on Etsy. When you're all out there trick-or-treating dressed as slutty witches or slutty nuns or slutty clowns or whatever it is you degenerates do for the holiday, never forget to check your candy for razor blades, syringes, and Satanic incantations, and always be sure to egg the houses that are handing out the Chick Tracts first. Happy Halloween, you little devils!
