Crazy Wolf - Tract #217 (CWLF)
Art by Jack Chick - © 2010 Chick Publications

Based on a story of Native Americans, this is a classic head-to-head battle between God and Satan. Guess who wins?

BG45BG45 Might as well try this...

BG45BG45 Jack Chick's tract "Crazy Wolf" is perhaps the craziest thing he's done in years. It takes a lot to say that actually. It doesn't really fit with the Halloween theme to a full extent, but is crazy enough.

BG45BG45 Oh no, Mary went to the white God! Apparently the fact her God is white is very important as it is bolded, along with the word traitor. How dare she betray her gods and go to this white God! You look really creepy dude in panel two.

BG45BG45 Hmm...medicine man keeps trying to curse this old woman and it fails. I wonder what that would mean then. It's not like there's some sort of higher power at work here that would block these curses; obviously the medicine man just wants to make a quick buck by claiming that there's something at work against him.

BG45BG45 Okay a male witch, apparently Jack Chick has finally gotten around to reading some Fiona Horne, Silver Ravenwolf, and Scott Cunningham. Never mind the fact "Crazy Wolf" is sounding like a story that goes "a friend of a friend". By the way, pretty darn shocking the creepy dude is a woman named Margaret isn't it?

BG45BG45 Hmm...those aren't ingredients in any Native American ceremony I know of Jack. Also, deities tend to trump mortals unless your tract has become some sort of Greek epic...and what happened to spitefully calling Mary's deity the white God? Does His pigmentation no longer matter?

BG45BG45 A Skin Walker? Seriously Jack, what are you smoking now? And we're riding horses, apparently ATVs and motorcycles haven't made it into "Indian country" yet. Anyone notice the guy tied up on the ground there? Good, glad you did. We're never finding out what happens to him. Jack utterly forgets the tied up sacrifice on a rock.

BG45BG45 Oh look, another trespasser is tied up and being killed with...corpse powder. Sorry Jack, that's not really that dangerous unless the person who was used to make it had an infectious disease and even then it's a bit of a long shot. Also technically ear lobes aren't that good, if you're going for Navajo folklore corpse powder, we probably want the fingertips where the fingerprints are and the bone at the back of the skull. Anyhow, uh oh for Mary, the Spirits are angry and telling Crazy Wolf to rip her beating heart out.

BG45BG45 Three days later? Jack are you intentionally mocking how long Christ was in the tomb for this guy's journey back from dealing with someone in league with the Devil? I actually kinda doubt it, I don't give you that much credit. Crazy Wolf is crazy Margaret, go figure right? But crazy and evil enough that he's got Henry hiding under his bed when the guy comes.

BG45BG45 Oh look, we're back to the whole White God thing. Chick shows remarkable knowledge in admitting, for him, that Jesus isn't white if he's from the Middle East. The kids seem way too cheerful about the impending messy death of their neighbor; I mean really, I know kids who curse at their elderly neighbors, but they don't actively jeer them about an upcoming and certain doom.

I don't think Jack could be screaming more about the need to "civilize" the savages than this. Also, I'm assuming that we're using the Navajo as the root of our generic Native American culture here, right? I mean you did butcher the Skin Walker and Corpse Powder from their culture. Anyhow...are the Navajo too lazy or scared to invoke Tsohanoai, the Navajo Sun God's name? Or is that just because you can't be helped to use Google?

BG45BG45 Hey Pastor, a homicidal maniac is coming to get me. Could you do something? Bless my house? Call the cops? Come get me the hell out of my neighborhood at least? Thanks for alerting the church and all, nice to know you care, but sometimes doesn't God encourage action alongside contemplative prayer?

o Page 11 collapse_button

Page 11

BG45BG45 That's nice...the most non-threatening demon I've ever seen, and coming out at night. So if that's supposedly Tsohanoai, why is he coming out at night to empower you and threaten you not to come back if you fail? Also what's with the snakes?

BG45BG45 So Crazy Wolf's spirit body is flying through the air with what looks like a squid and a small dragon? Unfortunately for Crazy Wolf, this is a Chick tract. That means that Mary's prayers are NOT going unanswered this time.

o Page 13 collapse_button

Page 13

BG45BG45 Oh look, Crazy Wolf has now taken on some form that looks like the monster from Where the Wild Things Are, and is flanked by his loyal dragon buddy and what looks like a cross between a squid and a vulture head. Meanwhile Mary is scared but humbling praying as her cat completely flips out.

o Page 14 collapse_button

Page 14

BG45BG45 Look, Mary's prayers are answered. An angel has come to lay the smack down on Crazy Wolf and his little friends are nowhere to be seen.

o Page 15 collapse_button

Page 15

BG45BG45 Satan is none too pleased that his champion has failed to kill this one defenseless old Christian woman. Mary actually displays some good Christian behavior here, praying for a man who wronged her, but this is totally undermined by Chick hamfisting it like every reader is an idiot. Then again, this is a sixteen cent cartoon tract that usually gets left in restrooms for random people to find when they're in a stall.

BG45BG45 Three weeks later for Crazy Wolf to heal. Three weeks to heal, three days of travel time; Jack really likes the number three doesn't he? He's either trying to not so subtly relate everything to the Trinity and to the Resurrection of Christ, or he really likes the Minbari.

Crazy Wolf wants to know how he got his butt kicked, and Mary is more than happy to invite the man who tried to rip out her still beating heart in for a bit of chicken. Basically she tells him that Jesus can kick his ass again, so she's not scared.

BG45BG45 Oh look, a rattlesnake is looking in at them. Is that a sign of the Devil, or is Chick actually researching and realizing that Crazy Wolf was associating with Taboo animals in the form of snakes earlier and this is a bit of foreshadowing to come?

Anyhow, now Crazy Wolf learns about Jesus. Since we know that this is a Chick tract, he's bound to accept Christ into his life soon (well usually; if Jack is feeling vindictive, people tend to die right after rejecting Him).

BG45BG45 Okay I felt like we could skip that. We're telling Crazy Horse the Gospel and he accepts, standard Chick formula. Demon is acting on creepy old lady we thought was a man at the beginning of the comic and you know something bad is about to happen. We find out Crazy Wolf is really named Billie Wolf and he's a whole new person now that he's been Saved and wants to go out to Mary's truck to meet her pastor.

Wait...just wait. Her truck? As in she could have just driven away the night Crazy Wolf was coming to kill her? As in, some dude made a three day journey on horseback when there was motorized transit available?

o Page 21 collapse_button

Page 21

BG45BG45 I'm confused Margaret. With the gentle insistence of a demon, you shoot dead the psycho everyone has feared for years with your gun. You had a gun...and you paid a supernatural hitman to take out Mary? You shot this guy over money, when you wanted Mary dead and you could have just shot her with apparently no ill consequences since we've not seen a single sign of law enforcement in this entire comic?! Why didn't we just use the firearm in the third panel or so?

o Page 22 collapse_button

Page 22

BG45BG45 Fortunately Billie got Saved just in time and he is greeted warmly by Christ. Although "skin of your teeth" sounds like it's The Message's translation of Jesus, where we replace stuff like "crowns of martyrdom" with "God's wild applause". Notice we pause to say Margaret one day went to Hell and the Virgin Mary can't save you.

What? It's a Chick tract. He had to work in his anti-Catholicism somewhere in there, and unlike God only knows how many other things the Vatican is responsible for, it somehow isn't responsible for the troubles of a Navajo village.

o Conclusion collapse_button

Page 23

BG45BG45 Time to end with the Sinner's Prayer; popularized by Billy Graham in the 1950s. Remember, Jack just told us that ceremonies can't save us, but he includes this prayer in every single tract. On that note, anyone else notice that Jack doesn't use American English for the word "Saviour", but he does for literally every other word? It's happened a few times throughout our journey.

Cute plugging of your own book. It screams "You're Saved now, so give me your no longer heathen money!" I'm actually amazed we've not had more book recommendations from your publishing company from this sixteen cent adventure.
